No. 1! Smarsh is Oregon's Fastest-Growing Private Company

Portland, Ore., June 22, 2009 - Smarsh, the managed service leader in innovative, secure and reliable email archiving and compliance solutions, has earned the top spot on the Portland Business Journal’s list of Oregon’s 100 fastest-growing private companies for 2009.

“This is exciting and motivating recognition, and I am very proud of what our team has accomplished,” said Stephen Marsh, Smarsh founder and CEO. “Our growth indicates that more and more businesses of all sizes and disciplines need time- and money-saving solutions for minimizing risk, governing their electronic communication and protecting their customer data. We will continue to innovate ways to meet these needs, and we’ll do it with the principles that got us here: commitments to perpetual innovation and to supporting each individual client as if he or she were our only one.”

The Private 100 is the Portland Business Journal’s annually generated list of privately held companies with growth representing the best in the region. Companies are ranked by percentage of revenue growth over three years (2006-2008). In order to qualify, private companies must be headquartered in Oregon or Clark County, Wash., exhibit revenue growth over the past three years and have compiled revenues of at least $500,000 in 2006.

Smarsh, which led all technology providers with a No. 2 overall ranking in last year’s Private 100, saw revenues grow by 318.06% from 2006-2008. Over 7,000 clients currently trust the company with their mission-critical data. Founded in 2001, Smarsh now archives more than 55 million emails per month.

Smarsh is uniquely positioned to help companies with integrated solutions for message compliance and records retention, proactive litigation readiness and messaging security (including email encryption and data-leak prevention). Smarsh’s client base resides primarily in the financial services industry (including investment advisors, broker/dealers, banks and hedge funds), where regulatory obligations have historically provided motivation for service adoption. Smarsh’s proprietary archiving service features robust and sophisticated message supervision and protection capabilities designed with comprehensive, efficient and compliant review in mind.

With increased regulatory scrutiny and consumer data protection mandates changing the way organizations conduct business electronically, demand for Smarsh solutions has expanded and diversified. Organizations in other highly-litigious fields and/or those facing governance or transparency challenges – such as legal, health care, government and education – are joining the Smarsh client roster.

In addition, Smarsh’s SaaS (software as a service) delivery model offers clients the ability to retain old messages for longer periods of time without having to deploy or manage the infrastructure. Clients enjoy relief from mail server bloat and upfront hardware and software costs. Data is securely accessible and centrally stored in Smarsh’s mirrored, geographically-dispersed data centers, which are managed and monitored by a full-time, onsite staff of specialists. Internal I.T. resources can be maximized, and clients have peace of mind in knowing that in the event of a disaster, their mission-critical data will be available and their email will continue to flow.

Smarsh recently launched smarshEncrypt, its end-to-end secure messaging solution, and has seen instant adoption among a number of its larger clients. Users can securely transmit electronic messages and files and establish automated, policy-based encryption controls for the entire organization. The email encryption service was designed to integrate seamlessly with email compliance tools.

In addition, the company has led with efforts to archive different forms of electronic communication being used in the workplace, including social media tools. Clients can now preserve, search and produce their organizational and employee Twitter feeds.

The results of the 2009 Private 100 are featured in the June 19 edition of the Portland Business Journal.
