Portland, Ore., June 25, 2009 - Smarsh, the managed service leader in innovative, secure and reliable email archiving and compliance solutions, announced today that CEO and founder Stephen Marsh is a finalist for the 2009 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year® Award in the Pacific Northwest. According to Ernst & Young LLP, the awards program recognizes entrepreneurs who demonstrate extraordinary success in the areas of innovation, financial performance and personal commitment to the businesses and communities.
Marsh was selected as a finalist from nearly 65 nominations by a panel of independent judges. Award recipients will be announced at a special gala event tomorrow night, June 26, 2009, at the Seattle Sheraton.
“This is an extraordinary honor to be included among this great group of business leaders,” said Marsh. “I appreciate Ernst & Young’s recognition, and I am humbled and proud to represent everyone at Smarsh. This honor speaks to everything that our team has accomplished since 2001 and validates our principle commitments to unmatched customer service and perpetual innovation.”
Smarsh, Inc. was founded in 2001 with three employees and a handful of clients. Today, Marsh oversees the company with more than 7,000 clients, 60 employees and offices on both coasts. Smarsh archives more than 55 million emails per month, and its eponymous founder and CEO is active in every facet of the business operation.
Smarsh is uniquely positioned to help companies with integrated solutions for message compliance and records retention, proactive litigation readiness and messaging security (including email encryption and data-leak prevention). Smarsh’s client base is concentrated in the financial services industry (including investment advisors, broker/dealers, banks and hedge funds), where regulatory obligations have historically provided motivation for service adoption. Smarsh’s proprietary archiving service features robust and sophisticated message supervision and protection capabilities designed with comprehensive, efficient and compliant review in mind.
With increased regulatory scrutiny and consumer data protection mandates changing the way organizations conduct business electronically, demand for Smarsh solutions has expanded and diversified. Organizations in other highly-litigious fields and/or those facing governance or transparency challenges – such as legal, health care, government and education – are joining the Smarsh client roster.
In addition, Smarsh’s SaaS (software as a service) delivery model offers clients the ability to retain old messages for longer periods of time without having to deploy or manage the infrastructure. Clients enjoy relief from mail server bloat and upfront hardware and software costs. Data is securely accessible and centrally stored in Smarsh’s mirrored, geographically-dispersed data centers, which are managed and monitored by a full-time, onsite staff of specialists. Internal I.T. resources can be maximized, and clients have peace of mind in knowing that in the event of a disaster, their mission-critical data will be available and their email will continue to flow.
Smarsh recently captured the No. 1 spot on the Portland Business Journal’s annual list of Oregon’s 100 fastest-growing private companies for 2009 (based on revenue growth). The Business Journal also recognized Marsh in April, 2009 as one of Portland’s “40 under 40,” young business leaders making a difference in business and in their community.
The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards program celebrates its 23rd anniversary this year. The program has expanded to recognize business leaders in over 135 cities in 50 countries throughout the world.
Regional award recipients are eligible for consideration for the Ernst & Young LLP Entrepreneur of the Year national program. Award recipients in several national categories, as well as the overall national Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award recipient, will be announced at the annual awards gala in Palm Springs, California on November 14, 2009. The awards are the culminating event of the Ernst & Young Strategic Growth Forum, the nation’s most prestigious gathering of high-growth, market-leading companies.
