Portland, Ore., August 13, 2009 - Smarsh®, the managed service leader in secure, innovative and reliable email archiving and compliance solutions, has been named to the Inc. 500 for 2009, Inc. magazine’s 28th annual list of the fastest-growing private companies in the United States.
Smarsh ranked No. 275 and will be featured in the September issue of Inc. magazine (on newsstands Aug. 17–Nov. 15). Complete information on this year’s Inc. 500, including company profiles and a list of the fastest-growing companies that can be sorted by industry and region can be found at www.inc.com. Smarsh also ranked No. 5 among the top businesses in the Portland, Ore./Vancouver, Wash./Beaverton, Ore. region, and No. 27 in the top IT services companies.
“Smarsh is thrilled to return to the Inc. 500 list in 2009,” said Stephen Marsh, Smarsh founder and CEO. “We appreciate the recognition, and beyond that, it validates our commitment to Smarsh’s founding principles: commitments to providing unparalleled customer service and to perpetual technological innovation.”
The 2009 Inc. 500 list measures revenue growth from 2005 through 2008. To qualify, companies must be U.S.-based and privately held, for profit, independent – not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies – as of December 31, 2008, and have had at least $200,000 in revenue in 2005, and $2 million in 2008.
Smarsh revenues grew by 831.4% from 2005-2008. More than 7,000 clients currently trust the company with their mission-critical data, and Smarsh now archives over 55 million emails per month. Founded in 2001, the company has achieved a series of milestones, launched new services and seen the scope and size of its client base expand through the first half of 2009. Recent highlights include:
* Revenue growth. July 2009 marked the largest new sales month in the company’s history, and capped Smarsh’s 31st consecutive quarter of increasing quarterly revenue. Several factors have contributed to Smarsh’s recent success, including adoption of the company’s SaaS (software as a service) solutions by larger clients, increasing conversions from competing solutions, new integrated offerings, a growing profile and deployment rate in different vertical markets and strong client retention.
“As cloud-based solutions have established successful track records over time, we’re seeing a natural maturation of the marketplace and organizations of all sizes are recognizing the cost, performance and infrastructure benefits of SaaS deployment,” said Marsh. “At the same time, I think that our clients and prospects have responded to our integrated suite of services, offering uncomplicated solutions to challenges that have emerged from the proliferation of email as a tool for business. Email archiving, encryption, supervision, preservation… companies are recognizing that these are not simply ‘nice-to-have’ - they are critical to an organization’s long-term success.”
* Recognition. Smarsh was recently named the fastest-growing private company in the state of Oregon for 2009 by the Portland Business Journal, and the company is a finalist for the 2009 Oregon Entrepreneurs Network Working Capital Stage Company of the Year. Marsh was a finalist for the 2009 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Pacific Northwest and was recognized by the Portland Business Journal as one of Oregon’s “40-under-40,” young business leaders making a difference in business and in their community. Smarsh was also highlighted by analyst firm Gartner, Inc. in its report, “Outsourcing E-Mail Archiving: 2Q09 Update.”1
* smarshEncrypt. Smarsh launched smarshEncrypt, its hosted secure messaging and file transfer solution, and adoption has increased steadily among a number of its larger clients. The platform enables users to securely transmit email and files in accordance with emerging state and Federal data protection and data breach mandates, while organizations can systematically enforce encryption/risk management policies through an automated, rules-based engine. The email encryption service was designed to integrate seamlessly with email supervision tools.
* Social media archiving. Smarsh has led with efforts to archive different forms of electronic communication being used in the workplace, including social media tools. Clients can now preserve, search and produce their organizational and employee Twitter feeds.
Smarsh is uniquely positioned to help companies with its integrated solutions for message compliance and records retention, proactive litigation readiness and messaging security (including email encryption and data-leak prevention). Smarsh’s client base is concentrated in the financial services industry (including investment advisors, broker/dealers, banks and hedge funds), where regulatory obligations have historically provided motivation for service adoption. With increased regulatory scrutiny and consumer data protection mandates changing the way organizations conduct business electronically, demand for Smarsh solutions has expanded and diversified. Organizations in other highly-litigious fields and/or those facing governance or transparency challenges – such as legal, health care, government and education – are joining the Smarsh client roster.
In addition, Smarsh’s SaaS (software as a service) delivery model offers clients the ability to retain old messages for longer periods of time without having to deploy or manage the infrastructure. Clients enjoy relief from mail server bloat and upfront hardware and software costs. Data is securely accessible and centrally stored in Smarsh’s mirrored, geographically-dispersed data centers, which are managed and monitored by a full-time, onsite staff of specialists. Internal I.T. resources can be maximized, and clients have peace of mind in knowing that in the event of a disaster, their mission-critical data will be available and their email will continue to flow.
