Spam & Virus Protection

With spam messages currently representing about 50% of all business emails, the ultimate goal is to block them before they reach your mail server. In doing so, you'll save your employees valuable time, while also preventing the need to archive this useless data for compliance purposes.

Smarsh's selection of spam-filtering solutions employ several methods to ensure that we block as many unwanted messages from reaching your inbox as possible, while nearly eliminating all "false-positives" (blocking of legitimate messages). Custom filtering rules can be configured combining: keyword and phrase conditional logic, header checks, reverse DNS verification, domain or email address blacklists, whitelists, as well as spam server database subscriptions.

Overall, the spam firewall employs ten defense layers through which each email must pass in order to make it to the end user’s inbox. Spam tolerance controls are set at both the domain (company-wide) and user level.

Virus Protection

Smarsh uses several layers of virus protection and we block harmful attachments at both the perimeter and server level.

At the perimeter of our email network, all incoming messages are scanned for viruses, spam, phishing attacks, and other malicious content. Each server runs a server-grade anti-virus application that monitors file changes in real-time and performs scheduled scans. We also run TrendMicro ScanMail for Exchange to protect email servers and email recipients.

To protect you from trojans or denial of service attacks within our network, we also install a software firewall on each server (in addition to network hardware firewalls). All virus definitions and pattern files are updated at least once a day, however typically, every hour.

All Smarsh servers are protected by a strict firewall, multiple layers of anti-virus software, and up-to-date security patches. The dual-layered virus checking engine is unique in that it scans messages twice and separately to make sure no viruses get through. Since the antivirus definitions are updated automatically, protection from new viruses is instantaneous.

All email is filtered for viruses using:

  • Dynamically updated antivirus definitions.
  • Dual-layer virus scanners with TWO (2) virus checking engines.
  • File attachment blocking allows the company to choose which types of email attachments to allow or deny.
  • Decompression of archives allows even password protected archive attachments to be scanned.
