The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) encompasses a set of requirements for protecting the security of consumers' and others' payment account information.
 
It includes provisions for building and maintaining a secure network, encrypting cardholder data when it is sent over public networks and assigning unique IDs to each individual that has access to cardholder information.
