UK & European Data Protection Act of 1998

The UK Data Protection Act imposes requirements on businesses operating in the United Kingdom to protect the security of personal information and to preserve information only as long as it is necessary to do so. The Act requires, at least by implication, requirements for encrypted transmission of personal information and its secure retention. This UK law has been in effect since March 2000. Its goal is to protect sensitive, personal data, giving individuals a right to access their personal records.
