We’ve been at it since 2001. With a background in the financial industry, founder Steve Marsh saw his consulting clients scrambling to meet the electronic communications mandates from regulators. At the top of the list was section 17a-4 of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, which had expanded to require the retention and supervision of email and electronic communications.
The Smarsh client base surpassed 250, including over 100 broker-dealers with email archiving service.
Smarsh opens an office at 75 Broad Street, steps from the New York Stock Exchange.
Smarsh formally moves to Portland, Oregon with a handful of employees, focusing on archiving solutions for broker-dealers and investment advisors.
Smarsh signed its 500th financial firm for email and message archiving services.
Smarsh announces its groundbreaking policy engine, the Virtual Compliance Officer®, designed to make email supervision more efficient. Expertise with compliance and supervision tools leads to significant traction with independent broker-dealers.
Smarsh raises its first outside capital from Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors, a growth capital firm located in Los Angeles, CA.
Smarsh completes the acquisition of CentraScan.
Smarsh ranked No. 2 on the Portland Business Journal’s list of Oregon’s fastest growing private companies.
Smarsh ranked No. 184 on the Inc. 500, Inc. Magazine’s annual list of the fastest-growing private companies in the United States.
Smarsh completes the acquisition of Financial Visions.
Smarsh crosses over 50 employees.

Smarsh adds email encryption and data-leak prevention services to its product portfolio. Smarsh also extended its archiving support to Twitter, becoming the first archiving provider to include this social network in its consolidated services.
